Technology Community FAQ

  1. What is the origin of the TC in NCSS?
The TC represents the mergers of the Computers And Social Education, a former SIG active from around 1983, and the Technology Select Subcommittee. The position statement/guidelines regarding the technology are a clear recognition by NCSS of the importance of technology

  2. What role does the TC play within NCSS?
The TC plays an advocacy role within NCSS to help the organization make use and study of technology a more prominent feature of the national conference and the organizations publications. For example, this year wireless connectivity is available at NCSS. Similary, POD-casts of featured speakers are being arranged. Technology will be the focus of a featured speaker who will also host a clinic. A technology lab of 30 networked computers has been arranged. Beginning with a bulletin a number of years ago, NCSS publications reflect the promising practices incorporating technology through a monthly column on the WWW as well as the April issue which focuses on technology. Most recently a book of lessons that incorporate technology was published by two members of the TC. Finally, members of the TC were actively involved in the work on the P21 technology skills map.

  3. What are the benefits of joining the TC?
The TC is active and is helping guide NCSS technology initiatives such as professional development. Becoming a member of the TC becomes a source of professional development for members but, moreover, also a platform for those willing to submit a proposal for conference sessions that will help guide others in NCSS as they learn effective ways to use technology with their curriculum. Similarly, members of the TC serve as reviewers of tech-orientated proposals to ensure there is quality in the proposed session. As with all NCSS community groups, there is a website to facilitate communication and work that the TC needs to accomplish. The contribution of your ideas with others is one of the best benefits for promoting technology in NCSS.

  4. What will be expected of me, if I become a member of the TC?
It would be expected that you attend the TC annual meeting at the conference as well as use the Website to facilitate communication and work that the Co-Chair of TC has indicated needs to be done. Submitting proposals for the TC meeting or a general session would be an expectation at some point in membership. Finally, members should make a commitment to be active and contribute to the TC well-being and development.
